Who is a Personal Support Worker?

A Personal Support Worker (PSW) is a certified professional dedicated to helping patients in the community live life to the fullest, with dignity and independence. At Adequate Health Care Services Inc., our personal support workers play a pivotal role by working closely with our patients and their families, providing personal care and support with activities of daily living. The care provided by our Personal Support Workers ensures patient safety. Here are some of the key responsibilities of a Personal Support Worker


Requirements

  • CPR Certification
  • Safe Management Certification
  • PSW certification from an approved and recognized educational institution
  • Immunization for measles, rubella, and varicella, and prophylaxis immunization of Hepatitis B is strongly urged.
  • Must be screened for tuberculosis
  • Experience in adult care, and people living with disabilities
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including empathy and the ability to build rapport with clients
  • Good communication and writing skills

Responsibilities

What Does a Home Support Worker Do?

  • Assisting with activities of daily living such as personal care (rise and retire), assistance with household tasks, respite care, medication assistance, special functions
  • Promoting a safe environment by demonstrating proper body mechanics, safe transfer techniques and home safety
  • Providing cognitive, social and/or emotional support to the patient
  • Preparing nutritious, varied and economical meals and snacks, including special diets, as determined by the care plan, using proper food preparation, storage and hygiene practices
  • Provides professional and compassionate care in homes and residences in the community.
  • Advocate for individuals with complex medical, health and physical needs.
  • Aim to increase individual independence through performance of life skills. 
  • Acts as a custodian for the household as required or assigned.
  • Carrying out all administrative responsibilities as assigned including the completion of  require daily documentation and chart.
  • Plan and implement activities as per individual support plan(ISP)
  • Ability to work as part of a team and alone.
